‘The Professional’ is W.C. Heinz’s seminal novel, about fictional professional boxer Eddie Brown and his trainer Doc Carroll.
The story follows both middleweight Brown and Carroll as they prepare, together, for Brown’s first shot at a world title. The book examines the relationship between trainer and fighter as the training camp progresses, at its centre the conflict for all trainers who care deeply and personally for their charges – how do you remain caring while preparing them for such a potentially dangerous event?
Since reading this book I’ve had more writing by Heinz earmarked for buying, so he’ll definitely be appearing on this blog again in the future.
