#14: ‘Journeymen’ by Mark Turley

‘Journeymen’ by Mark Turley is a collection of interviews with professional boxers making a living as supporting cast members to those trying to climb the ratings ladder and build their records.

I think this type of book is a vital insight into how the professional game functions; how vital journeyman boxers are to the development of young fighters, and the uncomfortable truth for boxing, as a sport and as a business, that while these boxers aren’t encouraged to lose, it isn’t in their best interests to win. This conflict in particular often results in the bafflement of casual fans as to why so many bouts on undercards and at small hall shows are so imbalanced, with the ‘home’ fighters almost always winning.

There are some very sad stories in this book, both directly related to boxing and as a result of difficulties in the lives of the fighters. Though what does shine out from these interviews is the pride that most of these journeymen have for what they do, and how they conduct themselves as professionals and vital cogs within the boxing machine.

If you’re not already aware of their work, please follow this link and consider supporting the Ringside Charitable Trust, who are aiming to set up a reliable support network to provide help to former boxers, whether that be because of financial trouble or failing health.
